Why You're Not Getting Clients (When You Know You're Good at What You Do)

The hidden problem that's costing you thousands every month—and how to fix it.

By Jordan Sellers • 8 min read

You're posting consistently. You've got testimonials. You know you're good at what you do.

But the sales calls aren't coming. The inbox is quiet. And you're watching competitors—people with half your talent—close deals that should've been yours.

Sound familiar?

After 25 years in sales and helping hundreds of coaches, consultants, and service providers fix this exact problem, I can tell you with absolute certainty:

The issue isn't your skills. It isn't your offer. And it isn't "the algorithm."

It's your message.

And it's costing you real money every single day it stays broken.

$2,000 - $3,000
Lost every month from a broken message (conservative estimate)

That's not a guess. That's what I've seen across hundreds of businesses over two and a half decades.

Those are clients who needed exactly what you offer... and hired someone else because they couldn't understand what you actually do.

The Hidden Problem Nobody Talks About

Most business advice tells you to post more. Network more. Run ads. Build funnels. Hustle harder.

But here's what nobody mentions:

None of that works if your message is broken.

You can have the most sophisticated marketing stack in the world. You can post three times a day, show up at every networking event, and spend thousands on ads.

If people can't understand what you do—and more importantly, why they should care—they won't buy.

Period.

Quick test: Open your website right now. Read your homepage headline out loud. Could a complete stranger tell you exactly what you do and why they should care?

If the answer is anything other than "absolutely yes"... your message is broken.

What a Broken Message Actually Looks Like

Before you brush this off as "not your problem," let me ask you something.

Do any of these sound familiar?

5 Signs Your Message Is Costing You Money

  • You're posting "value" consistently, but nobody's buying
  • People say "that's interesting" but never reach for their wallet
  • You've redone your website multiple times and it still doesn't convert
  • Competitors with worse services are somehow winning your clients
  • You know you're undercharging but can't seem to justify raising your prices

If you checked two or more... this is your problem.

Not your skills. Not your offer. Not your hustle.

Your message.

"Your competitors aren't better than you. They're just clearer."

A Lesson I Learned at 14 Years Old

True story.

When I was 14, I entered an FBLA candle fundraiser. I outsold the second-place person by 3-to-1. Won a gift card and got financial help to represent our area at state.

Here's the thing: I never once talked about candles.

When a wife answered the door, I said: "Imagine that baked apple pie smell filling the house when your husband walks in from a long day at work."

When a husband answered: "Don't you want to surprise your wife with a fresh smell when she gets home? Clean the place up a little?"

And then I'd close with this:

"Your support is sending me to state. I'm representing YOU when I get there. But I can't go unless I win. Will you help me?"

Who could say no to that?

I didn't know the words for it then. But I was doing something most "marketing experts" still don't understand:

I wasn't selling a product. I was selling a transformation.

Two years later, I was 16, working at Sears, and became the top salesperson in lawn and garden for the entire region and state.

Same principle. Different product.

The lesson that's made my clients millions: It was never about the candle. It was never about the lawnmower. And it's never about your coaching program or consulting package.

It's about the words you use to sell it.

Why "Posting Value" Isn't Working

Let me guess: Someone told you to "provide value" and the clients would come.

So you've been teaching. Educating. Giving away your best stuff for free.

And nobody's buying.

Here's why:

Value doesn't sell. Clarity sells.

People don't buy from you because you're smart. They don't buy because you posted a helpful carousel. They don't buy because you showed up consistently.

They buy because they understand:

  1. Exactly what you do
  2. Why it matters to them
  3. What happens if they don't act

If any of those three things are unclear, they'll scroll past you. Even if you're the best person to help them. Even if they desperately need what you offer.

What you think sells
"More value. More content. More hustle."
What actually sells
"Message clarity."

The Real Cost of a Broken Message

Let's do some uncomfortable math.

If your broken message costs you just two clients per month—clients who needed what you offer but hired someone else because they didn't understand what you do—that's:

  • $2,000-$3,000/month in lost opportunities
  • $24,000-$36,000/year walking out the door
  • Compounding losses because those clients never refer you either

And that's conservative. For some of you, it's much more.

Meanwhile, your competitors—the ones who aren't as good as you—are closing those deals. Not because they're better. Because they're understood.

Every week your message stays broken is another week you're leaving money on the table.

How to Fix It: The 5 Framework Shifts

The good news? A broken message is fixable. Usually faster than you think.

After 25 years of doing this, I've distilled everything into 5 framework shifts that turn invisible businesses into fully-booked ones:

The 5 Message-to-Money Framework Shifts

1 Stop selling what you DO, start selling what they GET

Nobody buys coaching. They buy confidence, clarity, revenue, peace of mind. Lead with the transformation, not the process.

2 Speak to ONE person, not everyone

The more specific your message, the more powerful it becomes. "I help people" = invisible. "I help burned-out consultants" = magnetic.

3 Lead with their problem, not your solution

Your credentials don't sell. Their pain does. Start with what keeps them up at night, not your certifications.

4 Make the next step obvious

Confusion kills conversions. Tell them exactly what to do next—and make it easy to do it.

5 Say less, mean more

Complexity doesn't impress. Clarity converts. If you can't explain it simply, your prospects won't understand it at all.

Each of these shifts seems simple. But when you actually implement them—in your website copy, your social posts, your sales conversations—everything changes.

I've seen clients go from crickets to consistent inquiries within weeks. Same offer. Same price. Same them.

Different words.

What Happens When Your Message Is Right

When your message is dialed in:

  • People immediately understand what you do
  • The "right" clients start finding you
  • Sales conversations get easier (because they already want what you have)
  • You can finally charge what you're worth
  • Referrals increase because people can actually explain what you do to others

This isn't theory. This is what I've watched happen hundreds of times when service providers finally fix their message.

The business they've been building suddenly starts working the way it should have all along.

"Clarity sells. Confusion kills."

Your Next Step

If you've read this far, you probably recognize yourself in this article.

You're good at what you do. You just need people to understand it.

I've spent 25 years learning how to turn confusing messages into compelling ones—starting with those candles at 14, through building my own businesses, and now helping hundreds of coaches, consultants, and service providers fix theirs.

I put everything I know into a free 46-page playbook called The Message-to-Money Playbook.

It includes:

  • The complete Message Audit Framework
  • The Customer Mind Reader Method
  • Plug-and-play templates for headlines, CTAs, and emails
  • The exact process I use with clients

No fluff. No filler. Just the frameworks that work.
